Hunt's Murder Mysteries

A Mystery Dinner is PERFECT for this time of year!
Check out Hunt Mysteries:

As part of the Halloween celebration, Best Western's CottonTree Inn of Sandy and the Country Inn & Suites of South Jordan have teamed with Hunt Mysteries to offer special overnight packages that include two tickets to Hunt Mysteries Dinner Theater throughout October. More details on the overnight hotel packages are available at www.huntmysteries.com for more information.

Join Michelle Powell from Enjoy Utah! at a performance at 7pm on Friday October 8th at Spaghetti Mama's in Jordan Commons! Call 1-866-569-1482 to reserve your tickets, and mention my name to receive $2.50 off per ticket! I'd love for you to join me!

Nineteen years ago, a little theater "experiment" launched members of a young West Jordan, Utah, family on a crazy ride that they never anticipated.

In April of 1991, The family of W. Lee Hunt, a Brigham Young graduate and Deseret News copy chief at the time, staged their first comedy murder mystery for a paying audience at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort.

Suddenly they were caught up in a wave of audience-interactive theater that has grown not only in Utah but throughout the country.

Every month since that little "experiment," Hunt Mysteries has found itself planning and executing the "perfect comedy murder" while enjoying its brand of dinner theater at some of the top hotels, resorts and other venues in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming.

Their adventures have taken various Hunt Mysteries casts on numerous airline flights, including a mini-tour of North Dakota, a trip to Glenwood Springs aboard Amtrak and two murder mystery cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

A big part of Hunt Mysteries’ growth over the years has included their annual Halloween comedy murder mystery dinner theater performances. There has been tremendous simultaneous growth of Halloween celebrations in Utah and throughout the country.

First on the “menu” was "Which Witch is the Head Witch?" which was performed in October of 1991 at both Snowbird and at The Homestead in Midway, Utah.

Other monstrous Halloween mysteries have followed, including "The Beast Must Eat," "Wizardry Dies in the Dark," "Spirits Awake," "Little Shop of Witch Doctors," "Monsters Anonymous," "Dracula's Grand Masquerade Ball: Deadly Wedded Bliss" and "Circus Phantasmal."

This October, Hunt Mysteries is resurrecting "Wacky Witch's Wedding," which will be staged at Boccias D'Italia in Ogden, Utah, from Oct. 8-23, and then at The Castle in Layton, Utah, Oct. 28-30.

Hunt Mysteries' newest Halloween murder mystery, "Gravestoned: All Men Are CREMATED Equal," will be performed Oct. 8-30 at Spaghetti Mama's at Jordan Commons in Sandy – right next to The Mayan and Megaplex 17 Theaters.

Also, Hunt Mysteries has arranged a special engagement at The Castle, 930 West Antelope Dr., in Layton, Utah, 84041 for three performances of "Wacky Witch's Wedding": Oct. 28, 29 & 30. For the three Castle performances, tickets are $35.00 per person for the show AND dinner buffet. (No discounts or coupons will be accepted for these dinner theater performances.)

Part of the added excitement that comes with Hunt Mysteries Halloween shows are the extra elements involved, including special lighting effects, sound effects, props, decorations, costumes – and just the whole Halloween ambience.

In fact, October has traditionally been the most popular month for attendance at Hunt Mysteries’ public performances. Private shows in October take a backseat to the special Halloween performances.

Show tickets are $15.00 per person; $10 for children 12 and under for shows at both Spaghetti Mama’s, 175 East 9400 South, Sandy, UT 84070, and Boccias D'Italia, 1045 North Washington Blvd., Ogden, UT 84404. Both venues will offer separate food and beverage service during the performances. Once seated, guests can order from the special Hunt Mysteries menus, including assorted beverages.

Doors open and actors begin mingling at 7 p.m. at all three venues.

Each performance includes fun song and dance numbers, loads of family-friendly comedy and a mystery that each guest helps solve if they wish. Guests can individually question all the suspects, the actors and work through the clues in solving the "murder." Hunt Mysteries turns the theater experience upside down -- encouraging guests to break "the fourth wall" and engage the performers in a battle of wits and wit! An evening includes a full package: dining, comedy, mystery and musical entertainment. Your typical movie and a pizza night it isn’t.

Booking reservations are simple: Go online or call 866-569-1482, and use Discount Code hmtown to get $2.50 off per person.

In "Gravestoned," guests attend the Morticians Annual Cremation and Burial Rituals Expo (M.A.C.A.B.R.E.) 2010. Making M.A.C.A.B.R.E. product presentations will be Mortimer Stillman, owner of the ageless Stillman Funeral Home; Dorian D. Kay of DeKay Specially Funerals Inc.; Eudora Burns of the Burns-Goode Crematorium and Death Sciences Institute; Seymour Stiff, author and expert on all things Zoombie; and Pearl Goodbody, freelance makeup artist who specializes in making the living look as good as her corpses. Remember, it's never too early to start planning for your departure from this life -- so order your double-wide coffin with drink holder, snack fridge and cable TV today!

In "Wacky Witch's Wedding," a Witches Coven gathers on Halloween night for a wild and wacky witch's wedding. On that night, a trio of witches brews a potion so powerful that the unbelievable happens! Then the fun begins! But something goes wrong - as they often do when mysteries unfold: Has the potion been properly prepared? Is there someone festering the festivities? Will the wedding come off without a witch? Characters include Gigi Gomez, the young and eligible witch who awaits the "arrival" of her groom; Nerva Gomez, Gigi's mother who'll stop at nothing to make her daughter happy; Hazel Witch, Gigi's aunt who sometimes gets things mixed up; Serena VaVoom, who can put any man or warlock under her spell; Drak Gomez, Gigi’s off-kilter uncle who is always ready for a good drink; and "The Groom," a surprise twist.

Pajama Jamm PJ Drive

Pajama Jamm PJ Drive

This is such a great charity event that I just learned about today, that I had to post it! Think of when you've been sick, ill, had surgery, etc. Doesn't it help you feel much better if you have new jammies and/or cute jammies to wear while you are recovering? I am sure the kids at Primary Childrens' Medical Center feel the same!

Pajama Jamm is a charity that collects pajamas for the kids at Primary Childrens' Hospital. This November marks their 3rd year collecting brand new Pajamas for Primary Children's Medical Center.

I know that Susie's Deals always has some super cute pajamas, for very low cost!....that's where I get most of mine! AND they are in need of pajamas in all sizes....some kids even wear adult sizes.

Who are they?
Hope Holder and her daughters are just 3 gals who saw a need, & hope to make a difference. They appreciate everyone who has contributed in the past & welcome all future contributors too.

CLICK HERE to be taken to their Facebook page for more information on where to donate, and for updates as they are made available!

Weber River Parkway

My boyfriend, in his constant quest for places to walk/ride bikes and over all mess with nature, discovered this little gem for me. Hidden behind the chaos of Riverdale Road, this trail is easy and fun.
At the trail head is a small "dirt hill" set up for bikes. (no motorized vehicles!) On our trip today we saw two boys around age 12 using the jumps and also a young child riding the loops around the jumps.
A paved path is great for walking (take Fido!) or biking and follows the river. Once on the trail, you're surrounded by trees and you will forget that Riverdale Road even exists a mere stone's throw away.
The second awesome feature of this area is the disc golf course! Don't know what that is? Read up on it here. When on the trails, be sure to stay off the course so you won't be hit by oncoming frisbees! We ran into 4 groups playing today. If the area is empty, feel free to walk through, just be courteous to those that are wanting to play the course.
Off the paved trail is a small path marked "nature trail" which has wren, chickadee and bat boxes.
It's an easy, short walk and great for family biking. It does not loop around, however, so you'll just come to the end and turn around to come back. Autumn is going to be a great time of year to visit this walkway. Your kids can gather fallen leaves, the weather will be perfect and there are tables and benches around for a picnic.

Festival Of The Old West

The history of the Old West is celebrated every year in Tooele City during the annual
Festival of the Old West.

This year’s event is scheduled for Sept. 25-27 at the Tooele City Complex and remains free to the public.

The popular, three-day festival consists of three distinct events: a gem and mineral show, a mountain man rendezvous and Native American powwow. The three make for an exciting celebration that always draws huge crowds.

Hosted by the Tooele County Gem and Mineral Society, the gem and mineral show covers the entire floor of the city’s complex building with colorful displays and demonstrations that fascinate all ages. Rocks in their raw form, along with art pieces made entirely of rocks and gems, are available for purchase.

At the rendezvous see mountain men in buckskin clothing, coonskin hats and listen to their tales about their dramatic lives in the mountains. Many of the mountain men give demonstrations and sell goods and food, much like they did nearly 200 years ago when they traded supplies to survive.

An ideal family event is the powwow that shares the heritage of Native Americans through colorful dance. Dancers, dressed in amazing regalia, will compete Friday through Sunday for prizes. The rhythmic drums used for the powwow pulse through the festival and create an atmosphere of authenticity. All of the dances are open to the public for viewing.

For more information about the festival, call (435) 843-0451.
The Tooele City Complex is located at 800 W. 400 North, Tooele.

    International Observe The Moon Night

Did you know that tonight is
    International Observe The Moon Night?

There are more than 275 events in 40 countries participating in this. I could not find one in Utah, but there is a FREE Stargazing party tonight at Stansbury Park Observatory. Check out the details here. You can also observe the moon from your own backyard!

Our only natural satellite tends to get noticed only during unusual astronomical events — for example, when it blots out the sun during a solar eclipse, or when Earth's shadow creates a total lunar eclipse (as it will on December 22nd).  In contrast, this Moon Night may seem as if it's occurring when the moon is in a ho-hum phase — not a brilliant full moon, nor a slender, svelte crescent, but a couple of days after its first-quarter phase. Well, it turns out that right now is the best observing opportunity in the moon's 29-day cycle.
Space.com's skywatching columnist, Joe Rao, points out that the full moon is so bright that details on the surface tend to look flat and washed-out. Just after first quarter is a much better time for seeing the moon in post-sunset skies, and for picking out the shadowed mountains and craters in sharp relief. What's more, nearly all of the moon's best features are illuminated.

    What To Look For:

  • Copernicus Crater: This prominent crater toward the upper left of the lunar disk spans 60 miles and is a mere 800 million years old. Huge rays of lighter material emanate from the impact site, which is surrounded by the ancient Carpathian Mountains.

  • Tycho Crater: 50-mile-wide Tycho is thought to be even younger than Copernicus — perhaps 100 million years old — and is surrounded by a similar burst of rays. The impact that created Tycho caused material to splash up and create a characteristic central peak.

  • Seas on the moon: The lunar "maria," or seas, are smooth stretches of the lunar surface filled with volcanic lava from a long-ago phase of lunar geology. The Sea of Tranquility is one of the best-known maria because it was the site of the historic Apollo 11 landing in 1969. Just last year, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter sent back pictures showing traces of the landing site.

  • The terminator: The line between light and dark is the best place to look for dramatically lit craters and mountain ranges, particularly if you're looking through binoculars or a telescope. Among Saturday night's must-see craters along the terminator are Schiller, Gassendi and Kepler.

  • CLICK HERE to see details of the above features.
