Ft Douglas Cemetery Tour

Ft Douglas War MuseumThe Ft Douglas War Museum is one of our favorite places to visit. The kids love wandering around the building looking at all of the artifacts.

Located at 421 Chipeta Way in Salt Lake City, the museum and its surrounding buildings are just waiting to
tell you their story. One of the surrounding barracks is said to be haunted by a ghost named "Clem".

This Friday and Saturday, October 29th and 30th, from 5pm to 8pm both days, you will get the chance to tour the Fort Douglas Cemetery. You will get to visit some of the more interesting citizens who are now resting in the Fort Douglas Cemetery. Listen to real stories of their former lives and how they found their way to such a captivating place. History will be told by actors in costume and will be suitable for all ages. You will even get a chance to hear about the real Museum Ghost named "Clem". CLICK HERE for more information on this event. Prices are as follows: $5 adults, $3 children, or $15 family. (The museum is always free of charge, but this specific event is a fundraiser for the Fort Douglas Museum). I can't think of any better way to learn the history of the people buried there than from hearing it from the "actual" people themselves! You do not have to pre-register, but if you would like to, call (801) 581-1251.

Established October 26, 1862, this was the home to U.S. Army troops until October 26, 1991 when the post was deactivated and most of it turned over to the University of Utah. CLICK HERE for more information the history of Ft Douglas.

PhotobucketWhile visiting the museum, we especially liked the "Lost and Found" display. Enclosed in a case are items that visitors have found around the area from the early years of Fort Douglas. It is fun to look at the items and try to figure out what they are and what they were used for. Some of them are obvious, like a baseball and a set of keys, and others were not so obvious and required a lot more thought and imagination. It is fun to look at the items and wonder who they belonged to, and what that person's life was like as they walked the same ground you are.

Museum Hours:
Tuesday-Saturday 12:00 to 5:00 PM
Closed Sunday, Monday and Federal Holiday weekends.

FREE ADMISSION!

Fort Douglas grounds:
Open to public at all times(except for active military areas).
Located just east of the University of Utah Campus Drive
Look for the Parade Ground where the big flagpole is located.
The museum is in the red sandstone buildings on the south side with the tanks.

This Friday kids 12 and under will be treated to a scary face pancake they get to decorate themselves with mini oreos and candy corn (ew, I know, it's a kid thing)!
While you're there, grab yourself some pumpkin pancakes. 'Tis the season!

What's In The Haunted Old House

This is one of our favorite things to go to every October! It's always a free event at the library, and the kids LOVE it!

"What's In The Haunted Old House" is music written and performed by Kevin Hurst and friends. He performs the songs every year at Salt Lake County libraries, and includes puppets, audience participation, and laughter!

Take a musical tour of Halloween with a hungry ghost, a compulsive trick-or-treater, a boy who’s not afraid of anything. Get lost in a corn maze and go on a quest for the perfect pumpkin. Sing along and become part of this library Halloween tradition. Not too spooky for young children. Families. (SIDE NOTE: This is one of my kids' favorite Halloween activities! We even bought the CD they have because it's SO much fun!)

My kids' favorite songs are "Wanda The Witch" and "Gonna Build A Monster". They are so much fun!

You can catch performances of "What's In The Haunted Old House" at the following dates and locations:
10/25/2010 7pm to 8pm Holladay Library
10/26/2010 7pm to 8:30pm Kearns Library
10/30/2010 11am to 12noon Riverton Library
10/30/2010 2pm to 3pm Herriman Library

Meteor Shower TONIGHT!

Apparently there is a meteor shower tonight! I would have posted this sooner but I JUST found out about it!

Halley's Comet won't zoom near Earth again for another 50 years, but the ice ball may still put on a show for some skywatchers this week in the form of a meteor shower.

This year's October shower — called the Orionid meteor shower, because it appears to come from the constellation Orion — has been going on since Oct. 15, according to NASA officials. It will peak today (Oct. 21).

Cold Weather means movie time!

That chill is in the air. Well, if you're like me, it's less a chill and more a "oh my gosh WHY is it so FREEZING in this house!?" as I stumble around in the mornings wishing I didn't have to leave my bed.
The days are shorter, the weather is turning but this is the time to make up some goodies and have family movie nights! Going to the theatres can be expensive and renting adds up fast (particularly for forgetful folks like me who rack up the late fees) but here are three options you either didn't know about or are not using to their full potetial!

Netflix. They give you one month free to try them out, just click on the free trial button on their home page. I pay $9 a month for unlimited dvd rentals (one at a time) but where we really get our use is from their streaming movies. The selection is HUGE and they are always adding new and cool stuff! (We just watched the Princess and the Frog!) It's easy to watch on your TV if you have a wii, psp or xbox. Simply set them up to your wireless router and you can access netflix movies right to your tv. They also have hundreds of tv series available, so you can catch up on past seasons or finally figure out what all the fuss was about with Grey's Anatomy and Lost. They even have Disney series favourites. If you have to stop a movie, it will let you resume from where you left off, even if you come back to it days later! (busy moms, do you hear me?)

Redbox. Utilize all those red (or blue) boxes you walk by on every errand! Best of all, you don't have to stand out in the dark and the cold selecting a movie! Create an account online and you can search for movies, reserve them at your desired location and even earn free rentals! And remember, if you rent a movie from one location, you can return it to any location! So if you nab that new release from a redbox in Layton, you can return it to the redbox you pass on your way to work in Salt Lake. It's convient and easy and they always have a good selection of new and old.
Here's a few one time use codes for a free rental if you want a trial run! dvdonme, breakroom and dvdatmac works at McDonald's locations only.

If you're afraid to cut the cable bill, just give online a try to see if you can make the transition. Hulu and cartoonnetwork.com have full tv episodes streaming online and you can connect your tv to your computer to view them. Netflix offers lots of popular kids shows, documentaries from National Geographic and Discovery Channel series. My son's current favourites are Deadliest Catch and The Liberty Kids (you know, that old PBS series?) We've had fun mommy son nights curled up with popcorn watching The Young Riders, a fun little series about the pony express that aired when I was a kid!

With those options, you should have happy veiwing until the weather warms up again! If you have any questions, comment below or shoot me an email. We have actually dropped cable at our house because netflix and hulu give us so much! We're saving $100 a month and I will admit I feel less stressed not paying that cable bill every month just to find there's NOTHING on tv!

FREE Tour Of Utah Historic Theater

Join the Utah Heritage Foundation on Saturday, October 23 to tour one of downtown Salt Lake's landmarks: the Utah Theater, formerly the Pantages II at 148 South Main Street. Doors will open for three hours, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  to view the interior of the historic theater and consider how it's  rehabilitation integrates it into downtown's cultural district.  This event is free, open all ages, no RSVP is required, and is sponsored by the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency and Utah Heritage Foundation.

The Utah Theater, also known as the Pantages and the Orpheum, was once a jewel of Main Street. It was built in 1918, and originally housed vaudeville performances, but it later became a film theater. In the 1960's a floor was added by Intermountain Theaters to convert the balcony into a second auditorium according to utahtheaterinfo.com. Unfortunately, in the process much of the original ornamentation in the auditorium was lost. Other changes were made throughout the years to accommodate its evolving use sparing some decoration and losing others.

Get Out And Vote!

A vote is your voice!

For your voice to be heard, you must register to vote. It is your right and your responsibility.

Our elected officials determine much concerning our quality of life: taxes, economic regulation, and the educational system. Don’t let someone else choose your elected officials for you. The biggest election issues often directly effect the youth and will impact life for years to come. The only way democracy works is if citizens, young and old, are active participants.

What are the requirements?
  • You must be at least 18 years old on or before the next election.
  • You must be a citizen of the United States.

  • You must be a resident of Utah* for at least 30 days before the election.
*An applicant is considered a resident of Utah if they have their principal place of residence within Utah and intends to continue to reside within Utah indefinitely.

The Utah State Government has made it SO easy for us to vote, there really isn't any excuse NOT to!
  • Worried about having to find childcare for your kids while you go and vote? Now you don't have to! VOTE BY MAIL! You don't even have to GO somewhere to register to vote by mail! CLICK HERE for the forms to fill out and mail in.

  • Are you not registered to vote? No problem! CLICK HERE to do that as well!

  • Not sure when you need to vote? CLICK HERE!

  • Not sure WHERE you need to go to vote? CLICK HERE and then click on "Find My Polling Place".

  • Do you always FORGET to go and vote?! Sign up for text or email reminders!

  • Not sure who the candidates are? CLICK HERE to read all about them, and what they stand for. You can also read through the issues up for vote.

  • Not sure what you need to bring when you vote? CLICK HERE for all of the requirements.

SO....as I said above, you really don't have any excuse for not voting! CLICK HERE for more information on voting, and more Frequently Asked Questions.

I have been voting via mail for the past two years, and LOVE it! I can do it in the privacy of my own home, at my own time, and I don't need to worry about finding somebody to sit with my kids while I go and vote!
