The Living Planet Aquarium

We used our Salt Lake Connect passes to visit The Living Planet Aquarium. It was so much fun, and the kids had a blast! Below is a video of some of our favorite things to see at the aquarium.

The first exhibit we went into was the "Discover Utah" zone. This is where you will find fish, frogs, lizards, and other creatures found in Utah. You will also learn about Brine Shrimp, and the Great Salt Lake.

The second exhibit was the "Ocean Explorer" zone. This is where you will find jellyfish, an octopus, "Nemo fish", a sea turtle, the "Splash Zone" where you can pet the stingrays, and many more ocean animals. We liked getting close to the sharks and sea turtle as they swam right in front of us!

The last exhibit was the "Journey To South America" zone. Many animals you find here are found on the Amazon, including Piranhas, electric eels, an anaconda, and many other exotic animals. This is also where the penguins are located. The penguins weren't there last time we visited the aquarium, so it was a blast to sit and watch them swim around!

The Living Planet Aquarium is located in Sandy, UT at 725 East 10600 South.

The Christmas Chronicles: A Christmas Radio Drama

Go back to "the good old days" when families would gather around the radio every evening and listen to their favorite "radio program".

Classical 89 presents The Christmas Chronicles, a Christmas story for radio, that captures the magic and mystery of everyone’s favorite Yuletide character—Santa Claus. Commissioned by Classical 89, author Tim Slover’s work finally reveals “a true and complete history of Santa.”

The series originated in accounts of the astonishing life and activities of Santa, recalled and told by the author, Tim Slover, to his children over the years. It all started with a strictly scientific answer to a child’s classic question: “How does Santa deliver all those toys all over the world in just one night?” That’s the query that unlocked the grand adventure to keep the magic in and the cynicism of the world at bay.

So, jump into your snuggly jammies, light a fire in the fireplace, brew up a pot of homemade hot chocolate, gather your family, and delight in this old-time beloved tradition!

There are a few different ways you can listen to this 8-part series of 30 minute episodes:
  1. December 6-13 at 6pm (one episode each evening) on 89.1 FM and 89.5 FM
  2. December 21-24 at 11am and 8pm (two episodes each day and evening) on 89.1 FM and 89.5 FM

World Nativity Tour

A special invitation from the Hyde Family:

Tour Description
We are very happy to welcome the public to our home during December 2010 for a FREE 30-minute guided tour of some of our Nativities. This collection is special because the Nativities are all handmade and come from countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The 100 sets on display this year will be entirely different from the sets displayed at last year’s tours. Our tour theme for 2010 is the Year of the Angel, so we will display only Nativity sets with angels—in every imaginable material and style!

This is our family’s best effort at celebrating Christ’s birth as it is uniquely portrayed by many cultures—from Argentina to Zimbabwe. We are inviting the community to our home to offer something very different and hopefully more meaningful than the fast-paced commercialism of the holiday season.
All are welcome, including groups and children. However, parents will need to hold very young children during the tour if the toddlers want to run around.

CLICK HERE to check available schedule, and schedule a time to do the tour.

Other Huge Storms in Utah

With the impending Blizzard 2010 approaching us within the next few hours, here are some other winter weather incidents in The Beehive State, taken from KSL.

I remember the 2003 blizzard, because my daughter was only a month old. I somewhat remember the 1993 storm as well. How many can you remember?

AVALANCHE-2.jpg
Impending blizzard a reminder of other harsh storms
November 23rd, 2010 @ 12:44pm
By Steve Fidel

SALT LAKE CITY — It's been long enough since Utah last saw blizzard conditions that the National Weather Service had to dig into its archives to find the last time it issued a blizzard warning.

"We're thinking it was 2001," said hydrologist Brian McInerney.

But that doesn't mean Utah has had a shortage of notable storms, or that all of the nasty ones can be categorized as blizzards.

National Weather Service Staff in Salt Lake City also found other notables in their archives on Tuesday, all while cranking out reports about the approaching arctic blast expected to bring "Blizzard 2010" to Utah this afternoon.

Here's a partial list, quickly compiled with help from Kevin Barjenbruch, warning coordinating meteorologist of the NWS, of some past big storms:

2003: Beginning Christmas day, a three-day storm clobbered northern Utah, depositing heavy wet snow. Trees and power lines collapsed under the weight of the wet snow, leaving more than 70,000 people without power. Emergency shelters were opened in Salt Lake City and Ogden. More than 15,000 traffic accidents were reported during the three-day storm period. On December 26, a large avalanche released near Aspen Grove, claiming the lives of three people.

1993: A whopping 23.3 inches of snow fell at Salt Lake City International Airport, the greatest single storm total, between Jan 6-10. For the month of January, 50.3 inches of snow fell, an all time monthly record.

1984: An early-season lake effect snow storm deposited 18.4 inches of snow at Salt Lake City International Airport, a new record for 24 hour snowfall. Power was lost at approximately 20,000 homes and about 500,000 trees were damaged.

1978: A 120 mile-per-hour wind gust was recorded at Bountiful on Nov. 11.

1948: The National Weather Service lists that winter as the No. 4 weather event for the Beehive State during the 20th century. It was the coldest winter on record to date, with record amounts of seasonal snowfall with nearly a 25 percent loss in some livestock herds reported. Many fruit trees were killedm and 10 people died from exposure.

1933: The mercury dropped to minus 30 degrees on Feb. 9, the coldest reading ever recorded at Salt Lake City International Airport.

THE BEST Homemade Hot Chocolate!

A friend of mine gave me this recipe for homemade hot chocolate. This is THE BEST hot chocolate I've ever had, so of course I had to share it with our readers!

There''s a huge storm headed for Utah this afternoon and into tomorrow! Get ready for the big blizzard by making a big batch of this hot chocolate!

This recipe makes 1 serving of hot chocolate, so make sure to double, triple, quadruple the recipe as needed!

1 cup milk
1 Tbsp cocoa powder
2 Tbsp sugar
a drop of vanilla
a sprinkle of cinnamon

Heat milk in saucepan. Add cocoa powder and sugar. Stir until well mixed, and add vanilla and cinnamon. Mix well. Serve.

NOTE: Get creative! This time of year I like to add a sprinkle of Pumpkin Pie Spice to the mixture! You can add any kind of seasoning you would like. Maybe some mint extract? Orange extract?

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house...

..the stockings were hung by
the chimney with care...
This is the story you will read as you drive up and down Christmas Street in Taylorsville. Each house has a billboard out in front of it that tells a different part of The Night Before Christmas story. Every house is decorated with decorations for the season. Kids of all ages will love looking at the lights, decorations, and reading the story.

...on Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer,

To get there:
Drive down 3200 West in Taylorsville. When you are close to 5400 South, you are going to want to watch for Royalwood Drive (5350 South). It is on the West side of 3200 West. Turn Westbound down Royalwood Drive (5350 South) and watch for Christmas Street on your left hand side. Christmas Street is 3310 West.

Here is a short daylight preview of some of the things you will see on Christmas Street this year.

Clark Planetarium

We used our Salt Lake Connect passes and visited the Clark Planetarium at the Gateway.

Did you know that all of the exhibits are free and there is no admission charge to get in?! The only events that they charge for are the lazer lights shows, and any movie you want to see!

While there, my kids loved walking on the moon, walking on Mars, looking through the telescopes, learning about the different planets, phases of the moon, and everything else there was to see. Below is a video of the interesting and fun things there are to see at the Clark Planetarium.

We saw the U2 lazer light show, and it was fantastic! In one song, they have a flying dolphin. It doesn't get much cooler than that!

While there, we bought some astronaut food. We tried strawberries, ice cream sandwich, and ice cream. I thought the strawberries were yummy, but my kids decided right then and there that they definitely do not want to be an astronaut when they grow up; they do NOT want to eat the food!

The Clark Planetarium is located at the Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City. If you park in the Winter parking across the street, you can walk underground beneath the street, and enter directly into the planetarium without ever having to go outside! This is great for snowy days! CLICK HERE to go to their website for more information.

Thanksgiving Leftovers PARTY Idea!

Every year after Thanksgiving, it's the same question on everybody's mind: what are we doing to do with all these leftovers?!

This year, our family has decided to host a "Thanksgiving Leftovers Blind Taste Test Party"!

For those of you that watch Hell's Kitchen, you are familiar with the Blind Taste Test. For those of you that don't watch, here's what it is:
It's usually the boys vs. the girls. During each round, one boy and one girl is blindfolded and headphoned, and fed a spoonful of food. They have to guess correctly what that specific food is. It's always fun to throw in things like Captain Crunch cereal, Basil leaves, Goldfish crackers, chicken (because they are automatically going to think it's turkey), and other random items in addition to Thanksgiving leftovers. The team at the end of the night with the most points wins. We will also be doing a kids round.

We are going to ask each guest to bring a leftover dish to use for the Blind Taste Test. Upon arrival, each dish will be hidden on a table behind a vale, and assigned a number. When each person goes up to take their turn at the Blind Taste Test, they will pull a few numbers out of a hat. This will specify which dishes they will be Blind Taste Testing.

It's especially fun for families that have unordinary dishes as a regular Thanksgiving tradition. In my family, we always eat a Danish dish called "sweet and sour red cabbage". For us, it's normal, and we would recognize the taste anywhere; for other families, they would have no idea what it is.

We are excited to try this party this year, and will update information, pictures, videos, and ideas after the party is over. We will be hosting it the Saturday after Thanksgiving (two days after Thanksgiving, since it's always on a Thursday).

Paul Mitchell Gift Bags

Our field expert, Jen, is trying to earn a trip for esthetics to Las Vegas. To earn this trip, she needs to sell 35 Paul Mitchell Gift bags by December 11th.

They are $29 a piece, and include a body bar, lotion, and body wash. They come in two different scents: Lavender Mint and Lemon Sage. If you were to purchase each item seperately, it would be well over $29. These also make great gifts!

To order, email contact@enjoyutah.org and write "Paul Mitchell Gift Bags" in the subject line. Jen will get a hold of you from there.
