Front-Country Ramble at the Ogden Nature Center NORTH
Saturday, October 1 from 9 - 10:30 am
All ages welcome!
Studies have shown there are five times as many day hikers in the U.S. as there are backpackers.  Join Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist Matt Hartman for a hike at the Ogden Nature Center North, located at 1176 North Mountain Road. Enjoy a morning trail hike and explore the impact of trail use and outdoor ethics needed to sustain our local recreation areas. Please call 801-621-7595 to pre-register by September 30 at 2 pm. Come prepared to hike with appropriate clothing, footwear, and water.  Distance: 1-2 miles / Difficulty: moderate
Wild Wednesdays -- Mammal Mia

Learn about the many cool mammals that live in Utah and the Great Basin region.  Touch skulls and pelts and learn what makes mammals unique.  Learn why you're a mammal!  Take a short walk with a naturalist to observe live deer and possibly other mammals at the Ogden Nature Center.  Meet in the Visitor Center.

An informative event for classroom teachers, curriculum developers, conservation educators, non-formal educators, university students, staff, and faculty, and all other interested community citizens. Join us for valuable professional development, networking opportunities, inspirational speakers and constructive workshops.  The Utah Society for Environmental Education Conference brings together the people, practices, and ideas of
environmental education in Utah. You don't have to be an educator to participate! Any interested member of the public is welcome. Student scholarships are available. Please register for the conference online at www.usee.org.

This African dance & drumming interactive performance will celebrate music and nature on the back lawn of the Visitor Center as we kick off the 22nd Annual Conference for the Utah Society for Environmental Education.  This event, led by Déjà Mitchell and Ibrahima N'gom, is open to the public as well as conference attendees. Please pre-register at 801-621-7595.  Déjà Mitchell teaches African dance and drumming for Weber State University, Eccles Community Art Center, Virginia Tanner Dance and the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind. She received the 2008 Ogden Mayor's Award for the Arts. Ibrahima N'gom has taught his Griot family's lineage traditional music of Senegal, West Africa since childhood. His group, Domu Africa, is a favorite in Santa Cruz and the Bay Area.

Utah has 18 species or kinds of bats! Kick off the Halloween season by learning about these mis-understood and amazing flying mammals.  Meet in the Visitor Center.

$4 for Nature Center members / $5 for non-members (Includes one child and one adult chaperone) A non-refundable deposit of 50% must be paid in advance to pre-register groups of 5 children or more.
Ages: 3-5
Learn about bats, birds and even seeds that fly as you explore nature's winged wonders.  Net insects, enjoy high-flying songs, stories, games and a craft as you learn through hands-on discovery about things with wings. Pre-registration is required.  Please call 801-621-7595.  Space is limited.
Scout Saturday
Saturday, October 15
9 am - Native vs. Invasive / 10 am - Conservation / 11 am - Venomous reptiles
Each session is designed to help scouts achieve merit badges.
$5 per scout per session
9 am - Native vs. Invasive: Filling a requirement for the Naturalist badge, we help scouts identify 10 native plants/animals and non-native species using field guides and scavenger hunts.
10 am - Conservation: Scouts will learn what conservation officers do, why they are nessesary, the role they played in history and how one becomes a conservation officer.
11 am - Venomous Reptiles: Scouts will learn how to identify the difference between a venomous  and non-venomous species with an up-close encounter with a live, non-venomous snake.
For all Scout Saturday sessions pre-registration is required for all participants. Pre-payment is also required for anyone registering a group of 5 or more students. A class minimum of 5 scouts is required to hold the class. If 5 or more scouts are not registered by 2 pm on the Friday before the class, registered participants will be notified of the cancellation by phone.

Have you ever wondered what a snake feels like?  What about a tortoise shell?  Come find out and get an up close look at the Ogden Nature Center's resident reptiles. Learn what makes reptiles so special in the animal world with a threatened Desert Tortoise and a Great Basin Gopher Snake.  Meet in the Visitor Center.

Friday, October 21 & Saturday, October 22 from 5 - 8 pm

The Ogden Nature Center education staff presents this not-so-scary Halloween event for the whole family.  Learn about native, nocturnal creatures like owls, bats, spiders and toads. Take a crepuscular creep around the nature preserve where you'll meet & learn from some "wild" characters. Visit the Wood Witch's Lair to sing songs and find your way through the Spider Web Crawl.  Food vendors, carnival games, treats, music & educational fun.  No RSVP necessary.  Please dress for the weather / held rain or shine.

Monsters in Our Backyard: Halloween Comes to Wild Wednesdays

Come dressed as your favorite wild thing (anything in nature will do) and discover what monsters live at the Ogden Nature Center.  Learn why snakes hiss and how tarantulas move.  Then test your nerve and sample some of the most ooey-gooey and grimey-slimey concoctions that our teacher/naturalists can create.  Meet in the Visitor Center.  
Class sizes are limited to ensure a quality experience.  Call in reservations over the phone and pay with a credit card or come in person to pay with cash or checks.  The Ogden Nature Center reserves the right to change instructors or cancel classes due to circumstances beyond our control including, illness, inclement weather or low attendance.  The Ogden Nature Center is located at 966 W. 12th Street in Ogden, Utah.
