Hotel Utah Celebrates 100 Years of Memories

| Pres. Thomas S. Monson performing the ribbon cutting |
"There was a time when there was a debate whether this building should be torn down," said President Thomas S. Monson at the 100 year celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony. "Some thought it should be, and some thought it shouldn't be; but I think everyone who wanted to see it preserved, felt it should be preserved because of memory."
Hotel Utah doesn't lack for memories, and memories are what has kept this building alive for one hundred years! Memories of the soda shop, tornado wedding luncheons, marriage proposals, meeting that special person you go on to share 47 years with, dancing at the Starlight Gardens, visits from celebrities and United States Presidents are just a few of the memories shared on the Hotel Utah 100 Year celebration memory site. While browsing through these wonderful memories, one of my favorites is the memory of Paulette Yeats. She tells of a time when her grandfather stated to his young child "Here comes the most beautiful woman in the world," as her grandmother entered the lobby of Hotel Utah. Reading her memory, I can almost hear the old-time music playing on the piano as he whispered to his young child. I also teared up while reading Anita Wells' account of having her wedding luncheon in the same room her deceased grandfather had held his wedding fifty years before.
You can read all of these memories, and share your own, on the Hotel Utah 100 Years of Memories website. Browse through vintage pictures of Hotel Utah on the J. Willard Marriott Library website.
This historic building served as Hotel Utah for 76 years. It closed its doors in 1987, and reopened after much restoration in 1993 as the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. No longer operating as a hotel, its purpose has been changed to provide office space for the LDS church, whose headquarters are in Salt Lake City.

Did You Know: Utah's "Lost" Counties...

Monday, June 27, 2011
Have you ever heard of Carson County, Humboldt County, St. Mary's County, Grease Wood County, Cedar County, Rio Virgin County, or Shambip County in Utah? No?! That's because they no longer exist!
In 1850, there were only six counties in Utah, then known as the "State Of Deseret": Great Salt Lake, Weber, Tuilla (that's how they spelled Tooele back in 1850), Utah, San Pete and Little Salt Lake counties.
You can read more about these "lost" counties, and why they disappeared, in a Deseret News article by Lynn Arave from July 17th 1989. Read up on it; you will learn a lot that you didn't know before! I was amazed at all the changes in counties over the years, and where these "lost" counties were located.
The Southern part of Tooele County used to be called Shambip.

By now you are aware of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project to build a home for the Gomez Family here in Daybreak. The family, and especially little Jonah have been through a lot already, and their struggles aren't over yet, so we're stepping up our efforts to raise money to help complete the home and provide a maintenance fund for the family that will help with home expenses and medical care.
A group of very generous local artists and performers is teaming up to donate their time and talents to the cause. A fundraiser concert to support the build and family fund will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at Herriman High School.
If you'd like to help the cause, but are unable to volunteer or assist in other ways, please join us for an evening of great entertainment to support this wonderful family.

We recently received an email from an Enjoy Utah! follower, Angie Center. She sent us a list of places that she has visited in Utah. Her and her family have been living in Utah going to school, and have enjoyed getting out and exploring what Utah has to offer, especially the free activities and events!
We love getting emails from our readers and followers! Sent your comments, suggestions, anything to contact@enjoyutah.org, or fill out the form HERE.
Here is what Angie had to say:
We really have had fun exploring Utah. And free has been what we can afford. Here's some of what we've done:
*Christmas lights with the music
*Temple Square at Christmas and again in the Spring
*The Dinosaur Museum in Vernal - State park pass free from library
*Antelope Island - State Park Pass from Antelope Island
*Drove the back side of Utah Lake and ended up and the Family Tree resturaunt in Santaquin
*Red Barn Apple Farm in Santaquin
*Manti Temple grounds - big hill for kids to roll down
*Spring City has the amazing potter who's shop is always open
*Timpanogas Cave
*Stewart Falls
*Nebo Loop
*Shakes in Heber City
*Alpine Loop
*Salem Pond
*Wooden Park in Pleasant Grove
*Amazing book store in Logan - Books of Yesterday
*Gilgal Gardens
*Salt Lake City Cemetery
*BYU Bean Museum
*Payson Park
*Splash Pad in Highland
*25 cent ice cream cones at Thanksgiving Point
*Provo Bakery orange rolls
Thanks so much for insipiring us to get out and Enjoy Utah. It's helped us not be jealous of all our neighbors who are able to take their kids to Disneyland. (That's what we're going to law school for...)
Keep up the great work!

We are on our second round of WHERE WAS IT TAKEN pictures, and the last one has not been guessed yet! I am getting ready to swap the pictures out for new pictures, so I will give the answer to the last one.
This picture was taken at the very top of Butterfield Canyon. From there, you can see all of the Salt Lake Valley and the copper pit to the East, and Tooele to the West. It's a beautiful place to check out!
Stay tuned for new pictures to come!

Tuesday, June 21, 2011
I just heard about this tour, and although it's not in Utah or the surrounding states, it is hosted by Utahn Paul Warner. I have always wanted to travel back to the "thirteen original colonies" area, and this trip is such a great opportunity!
You can find all of the information on the Liberty Tour homepage, but here are a few details:
When: October 17 – 23, 2011
With host Paul Warner
Days One and Two, October 17 & 18: Meet your hosts Paul and Karen Warner at the SLC Airport for a morning flight* to Baltimore, MD. Upon arrival we will board our motorcoach and travel north into Pennsylvania. Our first memorable stop will be at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the birth place of our National Anthem. Then we travel onto York, PA, centrally located near many interesting historical sites and close to the fascinating Amish Country. While in this area we will visit Hershey, PA and get an interesting behind the scenes look at the chocolate giants, Milton Hershey and Forrest Mars, while touring the famous Hershey Chocolate Factory. An experience in Amish towns like Bird-In-Hand, Intercourse, Strasburg and Lancaster will fill the afternoon. While driving through Amish country, we will enjoy a typical Amish supper. Stay in York, PA for 2 nights.
Day Three, October 19: After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive south to Gettysburg National Military Park and explore the museum, visitor center and famous battlegrounds. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. A visit to President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s home and farm located adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield will be available. Enjoy an afternoon stop at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park where you will feel like you just stepped into the past; stroll the picturesque streets and visit shops, exhibits and/or museums. A short drive will take us to Winchester, VA to visit George Washington’s Office, Abram’s Delight or 18th Century Valley Cabin Museums. Stay in Strasburg, VA for 2 nights.
Day Four, October 20: Don’t blink… This morning, start your day with a breathtaking drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. With you camera at the ready, enjoy spectacular fall colors and abundant wildlife. This unforgettable drive will take us to Charlottesville, where we will stop at Jefferson’s Monticello. Here we will have the chance to explore Thomas Jefferson’s home, gardens and grounds as we learn more about the Third President of the United States. Enjoy the beautiful campus of the University of Virginia, (founded by Thomas Jefferson). The ride back will allow a stop in the quaint town of Waynesboro.
Day Five, October 21: Today we make our way towards our Nation’s Capital. Our first stop will be at the Manassas National Battlefield Park where you can visit the Henry Hill Visitor center and learn about BOTH Civil war battles fought here only one year apart. Next explore Great Falls Park where the Potomac River falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and through the narrow Mather Gorge. Great Falls Park offers history, nature and beauty. In the afternoon we will visit the Lincoln, Washington, Vietnam War, Korean War and World War I Memorials. Stay in the Washington DC area for 2 nights.
Day Six, October 22: There are so many extraordinary sites to visit in Washington DC. Today is your day to explore on your own. Some choices are, (but not limited to) Mt. Vernon, Smithsonian museums, the Arlington Cemetery (includes the Changing of the Guard), our Nation’s Capital and Library of Congress, the Spy Museum, the Ford Theater, the Holocaust Museum, Alexandria Old Town that includes George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Your hosts, Paul and Karen Warner will discuss all the options to help you decide where to visit.
Day Seven, October 23: After a short church service and checking out of the hotel, the morning is yours to explore. Early afternoon we board the motorcoach and take a drive down Embassy Row. We’ll see the Washington National Cathedral, and then continue a drive past the Washington LDS Temple. Our last stop is the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD (ages 16 and older must have valid ID) where we will take a walking tour of the academy and experience life on the “Yard”. You can choose to end your tour at the Baltimore airport, or stay in Washington DC to do a little more exploring on your own.
