Fireworks Restrictions in Utah

With all of the fires burning in Utah and threatening homes and families, I am a little bit worried about the upcoming holiday and the increase of fires.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful with your fireworks this upcoming week, use common sense, and obey all of the fireworks laws!

KSL has listed all of the fireworks restrictions on their website. It is updated frequently, so check back often for more updates.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Special 9/11 Tribute

A very special event is going on in St. George to remember the victims of September 11th 2001. Below is a message from the event organizer. It is going to be very touching, and something you don't want to miss! I am posting it now so that you will be able to mark your calendar and plan on attending, and will post it again as it gets closer.

View the website for complete and up to date information.

Just a brief note to let you know of a very special project taking place in St. George, Utah September 9th thru the 11th.  My name is Alan L. Foote, I am producing a Patriotic Marathon, so-to-speak, in southern Utah to pay tribute to God, Country and Patriotism.  I am going to sing the Lee Greenwood song, GOD BLESS THE USA, nine-hundred and eleven times beginning Sept 9th at 6:50 a.m. and finish the morning of September 11th, 6:50 a.m. the same time the plane hit the first tower.

Staheli Farms have allowed full use of their property during this event.  I will be singing in a military tent surrounded with military colors - artifacts and memorabilia from the military will be displayed.  A solar light garden will feature 3,947 units -- one for each of the fallen on 911.  A Flag Arena will display flags as to represent all those who gave and continue to give so valiantly for our freedoms.  And yes, Apple Pie - what could be more American than eating a slice of apple pie and sharing your heart with your family or a stranger.

Here is the kicker -- we would invite anyone who would wish to, to stop where ever they are the morning of September 11th and sing with me the nine-hundred-eleventh time, GOD BLESS THE USA. This will be choreographed thru media personalities - -  the prayer being that as many as can will catch the spirit of their own heart-felt patriotism and sing that great anthem at the time mentioned.

Local Artists, Musicians, Zinesters and Screenprinters showcase their work

Photo from the Alt Press Festival facebook page
Utah is home to a vibrant scene of gifted artists, musicians, writers, and screenprinters. For the fourth year in a row, these skilled artisans bring their talents and wares to Salt Lake City Public Library for workshops, demonstrations, performances, and purchase. From 3-9pm on July 7, the public is invited to experience some of the best that Utah has to offer in alternative press.

Headlining this year’s festival are Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson, well known for their DIY book, Whatcha Mean, What’s a Zine? and the graphic novel Unlovable. Watson and Todd have completed eight books together, and have a broad sphere of expertise as authors, artists, and zinesters. Todd and Watson will be speaking as well as leading workshops at the festival.

Joining Watson and Todd is an eclectic group of performers, writers, and artists, including Mandate Press, Spirit Master, Night Sweats, University of Utah’s Book Arts Program, Jess Smart Smiley, Lars Love Letters, and many, many more.

Admission to the festival is free and open to the public. Be certain to stop by The City Library’s Canteena and search through the massive zine collection, one of the largest in the world. Hungry For Happiness Tour Comes To Salt Lake TODAY!

THE ARBY’S FOUNDATION’S
HUNGRY FOR HAPPINESS MOBILE TOUR ROLLS INTO SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

MONDAY JUNE 25

Tour Helps Fight Childhood Hunger in America During Vulnerable Summer Months

The Arby‟s Foundation, in partnership with Share Our Strength‟s No Kid Hungry® campaign, is traveling across the U.S. this summer on a Hungry For Happiness mobile tour to raise awareness about childhood hunger and increase participation in free summer meal programs in communities nationwide. The tour will arrive in Salt Lake City on Monday, June 25.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), while more than 21 million school children in America get free or reduced-price school lunches during the school year, just over 3 million of those kids get a free summer meal when school is out. For example, in Utah, only 15.3 percent of children who rely on school lunch programs currently participate in free summer meal programs. The

Arby‟s Hungry For Happiness tour aims to increase that number so more kids have access to healthy food during the summer months.

“Summer is a vulnerable time for kids who rely on school nutrition programs during the school year,” says Hala Moddelmog, president of Arby‟s Restaurant Group. “We believe that every child should have access to the food they need to learn, play and grow. Summer should be a time for happiness for kids, not a time to worry about where their next meal will come from.”

“Today, many American families are struggling to make ends meet, and the summer months can be stressful when already-tight food budgets have to stretch even further,” says Billy Shore, founder and CEO of Share Our Strength. “The good news is that there are programs available to make sure kids get the healthy food they need, and we‟re proud to partner with The Arby‟s Foundation to help get this message out.”

The Hungry For Happiness tour will be partnering with the Sorensen Center and Utah Food Bank. It will be visiting the summer meals program at the Sorensen Center from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on June 25. The tour will also be visiting the Arby‟s store at 225 N 400 W in Kaysville on June 26 beginning at 11:00 am. The Salt Lake City tour stops will conclude with a public event at the Sugar House Park Parleys Creek Pavilion on Wednesday June 27 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The tour will provide Arby‟s Kids Meals to children participating in the summer meals program, distribute information on local resources to the public, and provide an afternoon of summer fun such as hula-hoop contests, tug of war, bean bag toss, hopscotch and other family-friendly activities.

“No one wants to think child hunger can happen in their own community, but we see the struggle families go through right here in Salt Lake City every day,” says Ginette Bott, chief marketing officer of the Utah Food Bank. “We have the means to help these kids, so we‟re grateful the Arby‟s

Foundation and Share Our Strength are spreading the word so more families use our resources this summer.”

Free summer meals are available to kids and teens ages 18 and under, and programs do not require applications or proof of income. Sites are registered with the USDA and are held at safe, local places such as schools, churches and community centers. All meals served follow USDA nutrition guidelines. Families in Salt Lake City can find a free summer meals site near them by visiting  www.Strength.org/SummerMeals, calling 1-866-3HUNGRY or texting FOOD to 877-877.

The Hungry For Happiness Tour will travel to 15 cities across the country through August. While in each city, the tour will stop at summer meal sites to deliver a full summertime‟s worth of activities and games for kids, complimentary Arby‟s Kids Meals and education on available summer meals programs and resources in each community. In addition, the tour will visit public events in each city to help raise awareness in the local communities on these issues.

Sponsors supporting The Hungry For Happiness Tour include Pepsi, Shamrock Farms, Dr Pepper, Kraft Foods and Comcast.

Arby‟s® is the largest quick service restaurant chain to partner in a nationwide effort with Share Our Strength‟s No Kid Hungry campaign, and contributed over $2.2 million to its mission in 2011. The B-52s, Squeeze to thrill Salt Lake City crowd with ‘80s classics

Utahns on July 2 have a rare opportunity to shake their cosmic things with the legendary B-52s. The seminal ’80s band will perform with Squeeze in the amphitheater at Red Butte Garden. And Wumpsee is giving away two tickets to the sold-out show.

Enjoy a trip down memory lane while hearing modern classics that have stood the test of time.
Fans who are short on cash or who did not buy tickets before the concert sold out, may click here to visit the Wumpsee.com Facebook page where they may enter a contest to win two tickets to the show. Wumpsee is the definitive guide for events in Utah.

Simply visit the Facebook page and click on the summer concert giveaway link for a chance to win.

It’s been 35 years since The B-52s (Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson and Keith Strickland) released the band’s self-titled album, which featured the quirky “Rock Lobster.” Since those days playing parties in their native Athens, Ga., the women in the band have lost their beehive hairdos, but the group continues to tour and please fans with its long list of infectious tunes, which are sure to make you stand up and dance.

And what better way to warm up the crowd than with fellow ’80s rockers Squeeze. Having reunited in 2007, Squeeze is still fronted by original band leaders Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook. They will share their warm, friendly, melodic sound with the Salt Lake City crowd. Squeeze’s set list could include classics like Tempted, Black Coffee in Bed and Pulling Mussels from a Shell.

Pack your picnic, put on your dancing shows and don your beehive hairdo for what promises to be a great evening of music. It will feel like reuniting with an old friend after years apart.

Learn more about the show by visiting Wumpsee.com. And don’t forget to visit
http://www.facebook.com/Wumpsee for your chance to win two tickets.

Ogden Valley Garden Tour

On Saturday, July 14 from 9 am - 3 pm the gates will be open to eight magnificent residential gardens in the Ogden Valley.   The annual garden tour is a benefit event for the Ogden Nature Center.   This is an amazing opportunity to discover ideas for your own garden and revel in the colors, textures and thoughtful designs of these unique spaces.

Tickets:
$15 for Ogden Nature Center members / $20 for nonmembers.  All proceeds will benefit the Ogden Nature Center.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.ogdennaturecenter.org <http://www.ogdennaturecenter.org> or in person at the Ogden Nature Center -- 966 W. 12th St., or at any of the gardens the day of the tour.

Details:
The garden tour will be held rain or shine -- no refunds.  Tour maps and tickets will be available at all of the gardens, so tour goers may begin at any garden.  There will be art and treats in the gardens -- some free samples and some available for purchase!   Garden descriptions and addresses may also be found online at www.ogdennaturecenter.org.

The Gardens:

Garden 1 – Droubay Garden – 980 South 8800 East, Huntsville
It is very apparent that a garden lover lives here. Rosie Droubay is a Master Gardener, and her charming garden reflects her amazing plant knowledge, sense of whimsy and love of plants.  Bits of pottery, a blank wall full of faces, a beautiful bower leading to the firepit area, and loads of lovely flowers fill out this garden.  A winding lawn path leads to the orchard area, where a sense of the wild and unexplored awaits.  Rosie has many plants that aren't considered hardy in the Upper Ogden Valley, including a gorgeous tricolor beech.  Note: Parts of this garden are very old and some of the concrete is uneven. Please walk carefully.

Garden 2 – The White Garden – 6993 East 200 South, Huntsville Peninsula
Built right on the shores of Pineview Reservoir, and offering stunning views of the lake and Snowbasin, this beautiful home is built on a premier lot in the Ogden Valley. Designed as a traditional farmhouse with modern conveniences and touches, it's garden features traditional plants in a more contemporary setting.  A huge, sunken natural stone fire pit is the centerpiece of the back garden, which also features a beautiful swimming pool and spa, raised vegetable garden and mini orchard.  The covered patio has a built in barbeque as well as a cozy fireplace. Old-fashioned plants such as lilacs, roses, daylily, maples, edelweiss, iris, dogwoods and coneflower complete the traditional look of this new home. Vintage Cupcake will be offering free treats, and Joy Bossi will be signing her new book, The Incredible Edible Landscape, by Joy Bossi and Karen Bastow.

Garden 3 – The Holt Garden – 350 North 6900 East, Huntsville Peninsula
This fantasy garden was featured on the original garden tour in 2009, and many expressed their desire to see it when several new additions had grown in. Well, they have. The circular perennial garden is full of texture and color; the pool/fire pit patio has been completely reworked, and a new circular raised planter full of showy annuals and perennials graces the main driveway.  Brand new this year, a bermed, wooded area has been added to the front of the property, and features VanderWolfe Pines, Oriental Spruce, Bakerii Spruce and assorted evergreen groundcovers.  You will not want to miss the Yew hedge maze, giant Sorry! board game, crabapple alle and oversized, green stone fire pit.  Ogden Nature Center Information Booth and free samples provided by Ogden's Bistro 258.

Garden 4 – The Van Zandt Garden -1340 North 7000 East, Huntsville
Started with a design ten years ago, and added to each year, this garden is home to The Ardent Gardener.  Distinct rooms provide cohesiveness to the garden while masses of plantings tumble over the beds. This fully landscaped one acre property is constantly evolving to accept new plants and new areas are carved out each season to see what plants will thrive in the Valley's tough environment. A formal rose garden, English style herb garden, Native garden, Meditation garden, Secret Garden and koi pond provide lots of fun areas to discover.  Silver, nature inspired jewelry designed by Ashley Stoddard for sale, raffle for a gift certificate to Ward & Child The Garden Store in Salt Lake City.

Garden 5 – The Christie Garden - 6916 East 1325 North, Huntsville
This beautiful, family friendly garden has amazing dry-stack stone walls defining the upper patio and raised herb garden.  Barbeque area, fire pit area, and huge play area make this the yard all the neighbor kids want to play in.  Heavily planted with cold hardy trees, shrubs and perennials, there is color, texture and scent through every season.  Free samples from Beehive Cheese and artwork by Linda Sellars for sale.

Garden 6 – The Foulger Garden – 4808 East 3100 North, Eden
This modestly sized lot on a quiet residential street belies the magic to be found in the back garden. While most homes in the areas feature a big back lawn and perimeter plantings fronting a white vinyl fence, this garden has a gorgeous wild flower meadow, multiple garden rooms including a fire pit  patio across the seasonal creek, a hot tub, and a delightful dining patio. A definite feeling of being one with nature is felt in this meticulously maintained garden. Free coffee provided by Eden Coffee and Cocoa Co. on the morning of the garden tour in this garden.

Garden 7 – The Donahoe Garden, 3837 Elkhorn Trail, Eden (The Highlands)
Designed to fit in with the surrounding native hillsides, this garden utilizes much of the boulders found on the site during construction to gently retain the site and to provide planting pockets. Little of the native landscaping was disturbed during construction of the home, and generous plantings of native shrubs and flowers help blend the landscapes together.  A unique spiral herb and vegetable garden is also constructed of boulders from the site. Art by Our Children's Earth will be on sale in this garden

Garden 8 – The Hales Garden – 4485 North 3150 East, Liberty (Bailey Acres)
Another garden owned by a plant lover.  Narrow paths meander through lush plantings of drought tolerant plantings. This garden is full of texture with wild grasses, dry creek beds, shady tree lined gravel paths, and free form stone patios.  With beautiful perennials stuffed into every cranny, there is a surprise around ever curve! This home has a very steep drive to access the gardens.  Free lavender infused lemonade samples by Ogden Valley's Lavender Hill Farms, and artwork for sale by Paulette Johnson.

Many thanks to the following sponsors:
• Tri City Nursery • Western Landscaping • Ward & Child • Eden Coffee & Cocoa Co. • Bistro 258 • Beehive Cheese • Vintage Cupcakes • Lavender Farms Lemonade • Zucca Trattoria • Ashley Stoddard • Our Children’s Earth • Earth & Art • Joy Bossi book signing • Paulette Johnson Leaf Art • Linda Sellers.

Peter Karrie - A Phantom Returns

Event Name: Peter Karrie - A Phantom Returns
Event Date: Thursday July 19, 2012
Event Time: 8pm
Tickets: www.holdmyticket.com/event/39295
Ticket Prices: $12-30

Dubbed "The World's Most Popular Phantom" for his definitive role in Phantom of the Opera; Karrie has also been cast as Don Quixote, Daddy Warbucks, Jean Valjean, Judas, and so many other leading roles!

Karrie will be joined by former Parkite Rebecca Timmons and select students from the Egyptian YouTheatre Musical Program!

Peter Karrie’s voice has been showcased in many of the greatest theatrical successes in contemporary musical theatre, the highlight of which must be his highly acclaimed portrayal of The Phantom in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record breaking musical The Phantom of the Opera.

Peter first played The Phantom at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London before going on to play the role in Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vancouver and the Millennium tour of Great Britain, covering Southampton, Bradford and Manchester.

His performances have been reviewed as “definitive” and have earned him the title of “The World’s Most Popular Phantom” on two separate occasions (as voted for by The Worldwide Phantom Appreciation Society). Peter has also been acknowledged by The Really Useful Group and The Cameron Mackintosh Organisation as being the longest serving ‘Phantom’ of all time with over 2750 credited performances, as announced at the recent ‘Phantom of the Opera’ 25th anniversary celebration at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Peter’s other stage credits are as follows.

He originated the Che role in ‘Evita’ for the first national tour of Britain.

Peter played the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables for more than three and a half years at London’s Palace Theatre reprising the same role several years later and then reprising it for a third time after that. He was once again reunited with the role in 1997 taking part in a spectacular open air concert in front of 15 000 people at Cardiff Castle.

He was an original member of the cast of Chess, eventually taking over from Murray Head as The American (Freddy Trumper).

Peter’s first West End production was in Ray Cooney’s Fire Angel. This was soon followed by another short lived production called James Dean. He also created the role of John Blackthorn for James Clavell’s Shogun in Washington and on Broadway, New York.

One of his all time favourite roles was as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar (at the Palace Theatre).

In 2004 Peter played Daddy Warbucks in Annie. In early 2005 he created the role of the fire-and-brimstone preacher The Reverend Peter Price in the brand new, all Welsh musical Amazing Grace. This was followed in the summer of 2005 with an out of town run as Fagin in a Cameron Mackintosh production of Oliver!

In addition to his theatrical roles Peter has also hosted, for two consecutive years, his own BBC Wales television chat show called ‘Peter Karrie… Unmasked’. In addition to Standing Alone Peter has four other CDs on general release – ‘Theatrically Yours’, ‘Peter Karrie – Unmasked’ (live recordings taken from his BBC television series of the same name), ‘The Impossible Dream’ and ’On the Other Side of Love’. All are available on Amazon and iTunes, and can be accessed via Peter’s official web site www.peterkarrie.com

For FREE Summer Fun, there are 6 things you need to have on your "Must Do Summer List":

Nobletts Hike
  1. OUTDOOR MOVIES
There are so many outdoor movies around the state, I have a hard time keeping up with making sure the schedule I have posted on my blog is up to date! Some of the places that are participating in this include the Utah State Capitol, Snowbird, and many parks around the state.
  2. HIKES
There are many great hikes around Utah. Ensign Peak, Nobletts and waterfall hikes are all popular. If you don't want to go far from home, Red Butte Garden is the perfect place to go, especially with younger kids, and there will be a FREE admission day on July 24th and Sept 3rd.
  3. LEARN ABOUT UTAH'S HISTORY
Teaching your kids about the history of Utah can be fun and entertaining. Take them somewhere they can play a pioneer game. Benson Grist Mill in Tooele, Jones' Dairy in Taylorsville, and Cove Fort in Beaver are all FREE and offer great activities to learn about the pioneers. Fun At The Mill is happening at Benson Grist Mill on Thrs. July 19th, and Cove Fort Days are the first Friday and Saturday in August. Both events are completely FREE! (Also check out my long list of Pioneer Day activities, many of them free.)
  4. HAVE FUN IN THE WATER
Splash pads are popping up all over the place, and most of them are FREE! I have a list of the splash pads in Utah. They are a great, free way to cool off without spending money.
  5. DO SOMETHING EDUCATIONAL
Did you know the Clark Planetarium is free?!?! You can go there, learn about space, walk on the moon and Mars, all for FREE! There are additional charges for movies and lazer light shows, but just to go in and experience the exhibits is 100% free! Many museums in Utah are also free, and are found all over the state.
  6. TAKE A SELF GUIDED TOUR
    Splash Pad

The Utah Heritage Foundation has put together self-guided tours that you can download or print. Many of them can be added to your iPod and listened to as you walk the tour. I have also put together a self-guided tour with a scavenger hunt of the SLC Cemetery.
