Walk More In Four Program

UDOT Student Neighborhood Access Program (SNAP)™ has a challenge called “Walk More in Four” where students in Utah K-8 are encouraged to walk or bike to school at least three days a week during the four weeks in September. Students can win prizes, such as a scooter, helmet or bike. Also, schools who register by Sept. 7 and have the highest participation percentage will win a $500 prize and Golden Tennis Shoe trophy. Second- and third- place will be awarded $250 and $100, respectively.

We kicked off the Walk More in Four challenge today at Highland Park Elementary in Salt Lake. The official challenge starts Sept. 4 and goes through Sept. 27.

The Walk More in Four challenge objectives are to encourage safe walking and biking practices, promote healthy habits among kids, as well as to keep the roads clearer to reduce air pollution and cars on the road – all resulting in a safer environment for our children. (Information about Walk More in Four can be found here: http://www.udot.utah.gov/snap/parent/walkmorein4.php)

More information about the Walk More in Four challenge and kickoff event is below. We also have a SNAP Facebook page that provides safety tips and resources for parents about walking and biking to school safely. You and your readers can check that out here: https://www.facebook.com/UDOTSNAP.

Students at Highland Park Elementary Kick Off Statewide Safe Walking and Biking to School Challenge

UDOT’s “Walk More in Four” challenge offers the chance for schools to win $500, students to win bikes and scooters

SALT LAKE CITY — Students at Highland Park Elementary today pledged to walk and bike safely to school this year as part of the UDOT Student Neighborhood Access Program (SNAP)™ “Walk More in Four” challenge.

To promote walking and biking safely to school, UDOT launched its annual statewide challenge. Walk More in Four encourages all Utah K-8 students to walk or bike to school at least three days each week during the four weeks in September.

Students chart their progress for a chance to win prizes including bikes, scooters and helmets. The school with the highest percentage of students participating will win $500 to be used by its safety committee, along with the Golden Tennis Shoe, a traveling trophy. Schools must pre-register for the competition by Sept. 7 (complete details and official rules are available at udot.utah.gov/snap).

“Walking or biking to school at the start of the school year is a great way for students to develop and continue safe and healthy habits,” said Robert Hull, UDOT director of traffic and safety. “Students who walk or bike to school not only stay active and increase brain power during the day, but also reduce traffic congestion around schools, making these areas safer.”

The Walk More in Four progress chart is available for students to download at udot.utah.gov/snap. All participating students who complete the challenge and return their chart to UDOT by Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, will be eligible for the drawing for prizes, beginning Friday, Oct. 5, 2012.

Students unable to walk to school due to distance can still participate by practicing safe habits while walking or biking in their neighborhoods. Throughout Walk More in Four and during the school year, parents can help their children practice safe walking and biking habits by discussing the following safety tips:

·         Follow the safest route using the school’s SNAP Map (contact the school for a copy)
·         Walk with a buddy or group
·         Walk on sidewalks where possible
·         Look left, then right, then left again when crossing a street
·         Cross the street only at crosswalks. Obey directions from school crossing guards and walk bikes and scooters across crosswalks
·         Always wear a helmet when riding a bike. Make sure the helmet has a safety certification and fits properly
·         Wear bright clothing, especially when riding a bicycle, to make it easier for traffic to see you — or tie a bright handkerchief around your backpack
·         Never walk or ride while wearing headphones. They are distracting and make it difficult to hear traffic

More tips and resources are available to parents and school administrators at udot.utah.gov/snap.

Birdwatching in Utah

On a trip to Yellowstone a few years ago, my wife and I spotted a woodpecker that was orange and tan. We had no idea what kind of bird it was, but it certainly acted like a woodpecker, gripping the side of a tree with its feet and drilling into the bark. We thought all woodpeckers were black, white, and red (or red and blue, like in the cartoon). After giving several rangers a weak description and having no luck, we took the plunge and bought a birding book. Since then, we have a developed a true love for the birds of Utah. To learn about our initiation in the birder's world, check out this link which gives details on books, binoculars, and how to get started. (By the way, the woodpecker in question is a Northern Flicker.)
To find some of our favorite places to go birdwatching in Utah, click Beus Pond, Tracy Aviary, Bald Eagles, Antelope Island, Bear River Refuge, or Utah Lake. You can also visit Utah Valley Family Adventures and click the Bird Watching tab.

Utah Mysteries and Urban Legends: Why Does The Great Salt Lake Stink?

Spending time at the Great Salt Lake is a fun family activity,
but sometimes the smell can be overwhelming.
What IS that smell?!
The age-old mystery of Utah and especially Salt Lake City is "WHY does the Great Salt Lake stink?!" It seems that everybody has their own theory, so let's explore those most talked about:

Rumor #1: "It's the salt content!"
If you've ever walked along the shores of the
Great Salt Lake, you will without a doubt see large
swarms of flies
According to the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Project, the hyper-saline environment of the Great Salt Lake is what makes it smell. According to their website, "Most hyper-saline environments favor bacterial sulfate reduction and one of the byproducts is hydrogen sulfide—the culprit that smells like rotten eggs. In addition to hyper-salinity, GSL sports a relatively low water depth and low oxygen levels. This creates an environment where aerobic (non-smelly, oxygen using) bacteria quickly run out of available oxygen and the population balance swings to anaerobic (smelly) bacteria in order to decompose available organic matter (waste) without the use of oxygen."

Rumor #2: "It's the brine shrimp!"
According to the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Project, the brine shrimp and fly populations increase in mid-May, and consume algae and bacteria, causing the smell to be less than what it would be without them. With that in mind, it is also proven that brine fly pupae casings, brine shrimp and decaying algae smell really bad, especially when they are washed up on the shore and have the hot sun baking down on them. This adds to the stink that we smell. Have you ever taken a sailboat ride to the middle of the lake? There is no smell out there, which leads me to believe it's not the actual brine shrimp that stink, but the brine shrimp waste and other materials mentioned that cause the awful smell. That leads me to think that rumors #3 and #4 are more credible:

Rumor #3: "It's the wetlands!"
Many say that the wetlands are to blame for the smell
Captain JR of Great Salt Lake Experience claims that the awful smell from the lake is the wetlands. This makes the most sense, because when you go to the middle of the lake, there is no smell. The only time you smell it is when you are on the shores. The mossy atmosphere, combined with the brine shrimp waste and other materials that wash up on shore and bake in the hot sun, would most definitely cause a funky smell!

Rumor #4: "It's all the garbage that's been dumped in there!"
According to the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Project, and taken from their website, "Sewage facilities on GSL unload their processing effluent into the lake. Researchers found that Farmington Bay specifically has far more productivity (i.e., algae and bacteria) than any of the other bays around GSL. That means bacteria have to work overtime to decompose effluent nutrients in addition to bird, brine fly, and brine shrimp waste! Thank goodness that the brine shrimp and fly populations peak around mid-May to consume as much algae and bacteria as they do, or the potential smell during the summer months would be unbearable. Yay brine shrimp! Suggestions have been made to attempt diluting the overflow of sewage to help lessen the smell and bolster tourism. Even then, there would be residual (though probably not as overwhelming) smell from brine fly pupae casings, brine shrimp and decaying algae that are continually washed up on the shore in enormous decomposing piles and are made worse with the heat."

MY CONCLUSION:
All of the above?! To me it seems that because of the brine shrimp waste and other waste dumped into the lake by humans, when it washes up on shore, the high salt content causes higher levels of algae, and when this sits in the wetlands under the hot sun, the smell is worsened. All of those dead seagull carcasses all over the shores can't help the smell either!

What do YOU think? Leave a comment letting us know if we have "solved" the case of the stinky lake, or if you have another theory!

In the video below, Captain JR of Great Salt Lake Experience explains that the smell of the lake is from the wetlands.

Pick Your Own Apples

picking apples

UPDATE Sept. 2012: This has been canceled due to the drought and not enough apples to harvest.

On Saturdays and Sundays from September 1st to September 23rd, you can get your family out of the house and up to Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway to pick your own apples in their historic apple orchard.

You must have a reservation, so call the park Visitor Center at (435) 654-1791 to reserve your two hour time slot and for complete details.

The cost is $12 for a 2 hour time slot.

The historic Huber Grove apple orchard was planted in the late 1800s by Johannes Huber. It started out as a family orchard with 350 apple and other fruit trees, and grew from there. Huber was the first to ship apples out of the Heber valley. Most of the orchard is now gone, but approximately 80 of the original trees still remain and are still producing apples. Learn more about Huber Grove.
