Do Go Chasing Waterfalls!

It's time to get that last hike of the season in before the snow flies. Right now the leaves are at their reddest and the mountains are more beautiful than at any other time of the year. What better hiking destination than a waterfall? The Wasatch Front has plenty to choose from and most are kid friendly for even the tiniest tots. Try Ghost Falls near Draper, Grotto Falls near Payson, Battle Creek Falls near Pleasant Grove, Donut Falls near Salt Lake City, Cascade Springs near American Fork, Bridal Veil Falls near Orem, or Stewart Falls near Provo. (If we missed a waterfall please let us know in the comment section).
For other great hikes and adventures at museums, picnics, and birdwatching, go to Utah Valley Family Adventures!

REVIEW: Strangling Bros. Haunted Trailers

By Chad Gines, field expert for Enjoy Utah!
Thanks to Mike with Strangling Brothers for the chance to review one of the spookiest haunted houses we have ever experienced!
Last Friday night, Strangling Brothers Haunted Circus let us into their world of haunted trailers. I still have not recovered from the horror I experienced that night!

At first sight, I noticed the large white tent and crazy clown whose mouth you must go through to enter.  While inside the main tent, they have Odyssey Dance Company dressed up as zombies dancing to Thriller and many disturbing looking clowns to entertain you.

Once inside the trailers, they transported us into an evil world that would terrify even the most seasoned horror fans. We experienced everything from evil clowns, demented doctors, mutants, psycho children, zombies, giants, spiders, ghosts, skeletons, wolves, lost souls, to freak show accidents.

As we slowly walked from trailer to trailer they kept the excitement going by setting up props in the pathway to the next trailer. One transition between trailers was a graveyard with the living dead wandering around; another was a crash scene of a two-story bus.

Every time we escaped the haunts in one trailer I would get a feeling of relief until I realized the trailer we just went into was worse than the one we had left behind.

I enjoyed the setup of this place.  It is set up in a way that you continuously question if you have wandered out of the actual haunted house and into a place that you should not be. When Jen and I reached the end we thought for sure we were in a place that was not open to public and it scared us beyond belief. We started running out to find the “correct” path and got so startled when a certain thing came at us that I fell into Jen so hard that she got bruises on her side. I thought for a split second we were actually going to die. I LOVED IT!

While we were inside the trailers, we only saw two other groups of people. In one of the groups was a girl who was so terrified that she just sat down crying and the workers had to show her the way out. The other group was a small family of three. The daughter was so terrified her dad was carrying her and the mom was screaming at her husband that she was so horrified she was going to pee her pants.

I was amazed at how well this haunt was put together. I greatly recommend going to this haunted house this Halloween season. Just make sure you take someone you feel safe with and empty your bladder before entering to prevent having it scared out of you!

REVIEW: Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus DRAGONS

If you have not yet seen the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus: Dragons, your last chance to catch it is today and tomorrow.

My 7 year old son loved the motorcycles in the cages the best. "They went around and around, and then seven more got in and went around!", he said.

The amount of tricks the animals did were fantastic to watch. Animals such as cats, horses, dogs, elephants, tigers and lions were all part of the act.

"This circus was the best one I have seen yet," my husband said. "The ringmaster and his assistant were very entertaining, and the stars of the show!"

If you have not yet taken the chance to enjoy this year's circus, you can catch it today and tomorrow. Read here for complete details.

REVIEW: "9 To 5: The Musical" at Hale Centre Theatre

Angie Winegar did a fabulous job playing the part of
Doralee Rhodes, the character made famous by Dolly Parton
I got the chance to attend a performance of 9 to 5: The Musical at Hale Centre Theatre, and it was FABULOUS! Dare I say I liked it better than the original movie?! It was that good!
I am a fan of the original "9 to 5" movie, and was expecting the play/musical to be just as good. I was pleasantly surprised that Hale Centre Theatre did their own additions to the script, and made it even more fun to watch. The actors and actresses did a fabulous job portraying their characters, and the added love interest of Violet, and the crush of Roz on Mr. Hart, was fun to watch play out.
If you love the movie, you'll love the musical at Hale Centre Theatre even more! It's playing now until September 29th, so if you want the chance to see it, see it soon! You can purchase your tickets online or at their box office.
FREE Backstage Tours:
Before the performance, Hale Centre Theatre took us on a backstage tour where we got to see the prop area, costume and fitting room, and underneath the stage. We learned how the props are moved onto the stage by a track and pulley system. Free backstage tours are available to everybody on the first Wednesday of each month beginning at noon. Even though this is a free tour open to the public, you do need a reservation. Call (801) 984-9000. Tours can accommodate up to 60 people.
More about Hale Centre Theatre:
Hale Center Theatre is located at 3333 So. Decker Lake Dr. in West Valley City, across the street from the Maverik Center and next to Hollywood Connection.

September 17, 2012—Salt Lake City—The City Library provides the opportunity for local artists to share their work with the community.  Exhibits are ongoing, year-round, at all City Library locations. From September 26—October 10, artists have the chance to have their work considered for exhibition.

Providing exhibition opportunities to local artists is of great importance to The City Library, as it facilitates exposing residents to new art forms and ideas, and enriches the community by fostering creativity and inspiring curiosity.

Artists can submit either physical or electronic portfolios, and details for submission are available at www.slcpl.org/callforentries.

REVIEW: Nightmare On 13th Haunted House

Thanks to Troy at Nightmare on 13th for letting us check out Nightmare On 13th 2012 for our readers!
Chad and Jen had a frighteningly good time at
Nightmare on 13th!
By Chad Gines, field expert for Enjoy Utah!

Jen and I got to experience Nightmare on 13th for 2012. This place has been one of my favorite haunted houses for many years.  I had heard that they made many changes this year which got me curious if they could make such a fun experience better or if it would suffer from the changes.

When we arrived I was very pleased to see that the fun still starts the moment you get out of your car.  Many horrific creatures wander the parking lot interacting with and scaring everyone, making you question if you dare go into this evil looking building. We got our tickets and opted out of purchasing the VIP entrance just for the mere fact that even waiting in line has been made part of the experience. They have a large beast standing over the entrance warning about the terrifying creatures you are about to encounter if you dare enter.

Once inside the building they take you into a room and have you pose with a scary creature for a photo opportunity that you can purchase IF you make it through the haunted house alive.  We took two pictures with a very psychotic looking clown.  We then moved into a large room where they have a show and a narrator explaining the three different areas you are going to experience.

Moving from that room to the first area called Netherbeast.  We slowly found our way around this swampy forest like area inhabited by some of the hairiest horrible looking beasts you could imagine.  With how many times I got startled and scared I thought for sure I would get used to it but it just kept getting scarier the further we went.

After the Netherbeast area we got into a twisted evil circus like area called Cirque de Fear.  This place is like a demented fun house that could have only been imagined in the worst of all nightmares.  The optical illusions and twisted rooms you make your way through are only made more terrifying by the laughing evil clowns and blood curdling screams you hear from other people.  If you think haunted houses don’t scare you, this area will prove you wrong.

The final area is the Zombie Apocalypse.  On first entry of this area you are warned that the Mayan calendar has ended and all the dead are alive and are taking over the world.  This post apocalyptic area takes you into a city overtaken by zombies looking for their next meal.  As you navigate this area it is very easy to get turned around and feel lost like you might not be able to escape this horrible terrifying world.

If you are lucky enough to escape the zombies and make it into the decontamination zone you will exit into a waiting room where you can view and buy your pictures that were taken before the tour started.

I really enjoyed this years Nightmare on 13th and strongly recommend going.  All the changes that were made from last year surprised me on how great they were.  Autumn in Utah is one of my favorite seasons and great haunted houses like this are one of the many reasons why I welcome this time of year.  If you are looking for a great date or family night this Halloween season, don’t miss out on this horrifying but safe adventure.
